In a first session I always let a new client know that if they find I don’t feel like a good fit for them, to let me know because this is about the client, not me, and I will work to find them someone who might fit better. This is because I care about clients and I want then to get the best care possible. I work to make sure my sessions feel comfortable and safe, and although this is technically a clinical setting, I make sure it feels natural, something more like talking to a friend.
Fear in starting counseling is normal and natural. A large part of the fear in anxiety is because something is an unknown; you can’t picture how it will be. From the first session, I make sure new clients have directions to the office as well as what to do once you are in the waiting room. I try to take whatever mystery away from the experience that I can. I also make sure someone is feeling comfortable before getting into topics that might be difficult for the client.
Anxiety is a large reason to why I got into the counseling field. I have struggled and experienced high anxiety and have learned to better overcome it. I look forward to helping you in your counseling journey!
